Spices can both improve the taste of food and offer a multitude of health benefits. For some, salt is the go to seasoning that most reach for. This adds sodium to foods that may already contain an adequate amount, or even more than the daily recommended amount. This may increase body fluid and raise blood pressure. The health benefits of spices are hard to ignore when it comes to adding flavor, decreasing sodium, and even preventing disease.

For those who like it hot, chili peppers can add heat and also contain many health boosting properties. The capsaicin in peppers can promote heart health, offer pain relief, and there is even evidence that it can help men ward off prostate cancer. Habaneros are among the hottest peppers in the world, but for a milder heat try adding jalapenos to sauces or on sandwiches, and cherry peppers are another way to enjoy a mild heat.

Fennel seeds are sweet and used in a variety of dishes. They also contain anti-oxidants that can help eliminate the free radicals that are responsible for producing cancer. It is also high in fiber which aids in digestion and a healthy colon. It contains vitamins and minerals like copper, iron, calcium, potassium and manganese. It protects against infection and even lowers cholesterol.

Turmeric reduces inflammation and block the formation of cancers. Inflammation is a common problem for those who suffer from arthritis, so turmeric can help to reduce inflammation, thus reduce the pain associated with arthritis. It is best used to flavor your favorite poultry dishes.

Parsley may seem like it is just there to decorate the plate but don't hesitate to take a taste. If you had a meal that was particularly heavy on the garlic, chew on some parsley to combat bad breath. It may also aid in the passing of a kidney stone, and prevent plaque build-up in arteries. To add in your diet, add it to sandwiches or sauces.

Capsaicin can help to speed up metabolism and improve heart health. For those who are carrying around extra pounds this is good news. Capsaicin is found in a variety of chili peppers and also helps to aid pain relief and may help to prevent prostate cancer.

Thyme is an antiseptic and antibacterial. It is so powerful that it can help rid the body of the infection known as MRSA. MRSA used to be an infection that was usually acquired while staying in a hospital, but lately it has been finding its way into the community. This infection is extremely resistant to antibiotics, but thyme has been known to assist in killing this infection.

There is no doubt that spices increase the flavor of all your favorite foods. Since they are all natural, you can use a lot or a little, depending on your taste. The fact that there so many health benefits of spices is just a bonus. So go ahead and stock that spice rack with all your favorite spices, and take comfort in the knowledge that you are doing something great for your health.
