Essential Information About Teeth Bleaching

By Alison Wilcox

In today's modern world, it is not difficult to come across teeth bleaching tips. However, because there are so many products of this type on the market, it can be a bit frustrating for one to decide which one is most effective. Each manufacturer claims that their formula offers the best results, but savvy consumers understand that this is not always true. It helps if the person realizes that no matter which brand name a product is sold under, hydrogen peroxide is almost always the active ingredient.

Hydrogen peroxide acts as a potent stain remover, but it does not harm the enamel on one's teeth. Standard concentration is between ten percent and thirty percent. This is because this range is considered safe for use by most dentists and cosmetic professionals. Stronger solutions can be purchased, but one must often get a prescription in order to obtain a higher concentration.

The positive outcome associated with the use of hydrogen peroxide starts when the solution begins breaking down on the surface of one's teeth. It generally takes about five minutes for this to occur. Afterwards, the person must leave the solution on his or her teeth for another 15 minutes in order to lighten the surface of each tooth to a brighter color.

The solution is usually sold in gel form. Depending on the brand one purchases, a tray may be included in which the gel can be placed for the purpose of keeping it against the teeth while it goes to work. Although some whitening formulas can be used with a brush and painted on the tooth's surface, gels are favored by most consumers.

As mentioned previously, a person cannot typically purchase a formula that contains more than thirty percent hydrogen peroxide. However, if a stronger blend is desired, a cosmetic dentist can complete the bleaching process.

The aforementioned products may also contain carbamide peroxide. Because it is sold over-the-counter, this formula cannot contain more than thirty percent peroxide. However, it does seem to work at a faster pace than other types of peroxide. Results will vary from one person to another, which is why a person may find it necessary to try different strengths before discovering the perfect cream or bleaching gel.

Similar to any cosmetic procedure, including those that are done at home, there are risks and side effects associated with bleaching gels that contain hydrogen peroxide. For example, most dentists advise against the overuse of such gels. This is due to the fact that if they are used access, the acidic properties in such formulas can eventually harm tooth enamel.

Additionally, overusing any product that contains peroxide may have the potential to contribute to mouth cancers. Burns on the gum line and tooth sensitivity are also undesirable side effects. However, these can be controlled by avoiding contact with the gums and by removing the solution after the appropriate amount of time has elapsed. As always, it is wise for one to speak to his or her dentist prior to using any teeth bleaching product.
