When choosing a supplement as a weight lifter or athlete, it is advisable to be aware that there are three different types of supplements that you can choose from. One is formulated specifically for general health benefits, another is created to help your muscles and their surrounding tissue repair and recover, and the last is designed to be ingested prior to working out, to help build muscle. Each of these different supplements provides a different set of nutrients and resulting physical effects, and depending on your desired outcome, all may be either right or wrong.

The first category, those intended for general health benefits overall, are specifically designed to meet a variety of lifestyles and nutritional deficiencies. Fish oils, for instance, are a common ingredient, as they are naturally full of essential fatty acids that help to promote good health overall and peak physical fitness. Other types of regular mineral and multivitamin supplements are also a good choice, as many professionals in the medical field recommend taking said supplements on a regular basis no matter what, to help fill in the gaps of nutrients that we suffer from such hectic daily lives. Vitamin D is one exceptional supplement that can be taken daily to help naturally improve endurance and strength. So no matter what type of physical fitness activities are preferred or who is doing them, multivitamins and mineral supplements are always a good recommendation.

Supplements full of protein, especially things like protein powder such as creatine, make up the second category of supplements. Designed to boost cellular energy that helps you to work out harder and for longer periods of time, products high in protein help to improve overall strength and help with recovery of the muscles and tissue. Carbohydrates are a good thing to increase in your diet if you want to add extra pounds, and are also a good source for quick, immediate energy.

The last class of supplements are those that are used right before a work out or training session. They contain ingredients designed to boost energy levels and stamina, as well as allowing you to get better performance. Caffeine is a common component in these formulas, and so is beta alanine. Nitrous is a common choice because it can provide bursts of strength and get you pumped when it matters most. A number of the commercial products may include many different ingredients that all have similar actions but these can be costly as well.

No matter which product you choose to use or invest in, just be aware that there are some general safety guidelines that should be followed. For one, make sure you are only ever buying from well-known and trusted brands, whose manufacturers create a reliable product. Choosing a lower quality product in an attempt to save money will undoubtedly backfire, and you will end up getting exactly what you paid for: almost nothing.
