Fancy Snowboarding but too Nervous to Try? Read how to Take the Plunge!

Snowboarding is 'gnarly' and 'sik' and all those other words we do not understand, and is still considered very much an extreme sport. It may be a slightly intimidating choice for those looking to get in to winter sports, however it's avid followers say that it is surprisingly easy to get into. Here we will take a tentative step towards understanding this sport and the culture that goes along with it.

Snowboarding has been around since the 1920s but it was during the 70s that it received its modern makeover. American skateboarder Tom Sims was the first person to make what we now call a snowboard and articles in US magazine Newsweek helped propel its popularity. The shape and size of the 'deck' has changed many times over the years although nowadays they almost always come in a standard length and are made of a lightweight plywood.

Modern snowboarding is a huge market with millions of followers so it's a great way to meet people and have a luxurious vacation at the same time. With so many clothing brands offering the essential gear there will always be something of your style and size, and don't forget you can use the colours of your snowboard to match or play off the colour of your clothing - so make sure you look perfect on the slopes! Just because it's a sport, it doesn't mean snowboarding needs to not be feminine. Just a cursory look online will show you so many variations of style and comfort. Once you're dressed for it though, you need to know what board to buy.

There are so many brands and designs, it's impossible not get lost in the variety. Right now, with the current 80s throwback style that is so on trend, you can easily recapture snowboarding's golden age. You will be able to find the perfect winter sports wardrobe at the moment which means it won't even matter when you fall on your face!

Don't be daunted by the seemingly endless slang and lingo used as well, it may seem like a whole new language but the odd words used normally just refer to different jumps or stances and you can look online for a snowboarding glossary to help get to grips with it all.

Personally, I've got a lot further to go until I reach even a good amateur level but it's an addictive sport and I like any new hobby, besides the more you practice the better you get right? Joining online forums and mailing lists is a good way of meeting other snowboard enthusiasts of all ages and levels. I've also found it handy in getting groups together for trips, learning about which resorts to try or even just chatting about previous trips. There's such a vast array of possibilities for excitement with winter sports and I'm glad I didn't give up on it. Skiing may not have been for me but snowboarding is the new me!
